How Token Counting Works
What Are Tokens?
Tokens are chunks of text that AI models process. They can be words, parts of words, or punctuation. For example, "ChatGPT" might be tokenized as "Chat" + "G" + "PT". Understanding tokenization helps you write more efficient prompts.
Why Tokens = Money
AI providers charge per token, not per word. Both input (your prompt) and output (AI response) tokens are billed. A 1,000-word document typically contains 1,300-1,500 tokens. Optimizing for fewer tokens directly reduces costs.
Context Windows
Each model has a maximum context window (e.g., GPT-4o: 128K tokens). This limit includes both your input AND the AI's response. Going over means your request will fail or earlier content gets truncated.
